“You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.'” (Acts 20:34-35)
Last Friday night in our small group, Samuel’s sharing reminded me where church really is.
He said that we’ve all been too limited in our minds about what is “church.” “Church” is not a building. Neither should it be limited geographically nor even to a group of people nor a congregation. We’ve gotten so busy in our lives that we’re busy “doing church.” Many of us have tons of responsibility in “serving at church” that we lose sight of what’s important.
He said that, let’s say on Sunday morning you’re in a hurry to “go to church” because you have to lead worship (or to be an usher, etc.) in the worship service. But while you’re on your way, someone in need calls you up and asks you for help or perhaps asks you for your time to listen to him/her. Our usual reaction is to say we’re busy instead of offering immediate help. But what we should do is to tend to that person’s needs.
His point is this: church is wherever we’re called to meet people’s needs. Meeting people’s needs is the most tangible way of worshipping and serving God. Acts 2:44-45 even described the early church this way: “And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common; and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.”

The Church is called to serve (meeting needs) and she is also called to help people distinguish between needs and wants. There are many needs that only felt-needs, and I believe, those needs are to be separated from the genuine needs. Of course, dealing with felt-needs may also open some doors to the real needs underneath. However, confusing the two encourages greed and is a waste of Kingdom resources.
